India Sets $1 Billion Goal for Banana Exports to Russia via Sea Routes

India is setting its sights on significantly boosting banana exports to Russia, with an ambitious goal of achieving $1 billion in export revenue in the near future. Following successful trial shipments to countries like the Netherlands via sea routes, India is now focusing on expanding its maritime export capabilities for fresh produce, including bananas.
Currently, the majority of fruit exports, including bananas, are carried out via air transport due to limited volumes and varying ripening durations. To overcome these challenges and scale up exports, India is developing dedicated sea protocols for fresh fruits like bananas, mangoes, pomegranates, and jackfruit. This shift to maritime export routes is expected to reduce costs, increase volumes, and open up new markets.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce, is leading this initiative. APEDA, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has been actively working on protocols to ensure the quality and freshness of bananas during sea transportation. APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev recently stated, “We are targeting Russia to boost banana exports and will participate in buyer-seller meets in Russia to achieve this.”
India’s banana exports have witnessed remarkable growth, reaching $300 million in 2023-24, up from $176 million in the previous year. This progress is part of India’s larger effort to expand its global market share in banana exports, which has grown from 0.21% in 2013 to 1.74% in 2023.
As the world’s largest producer of bananas, India has made significant strides in improving both the quantity and quality of its produce. The government has played a key role by providing financial assistance to farmers, improving agricultural infrastructure, and facilitating access to global markets. Additionally, the adoption of modern farming techniques by Indian farmers has contributed to higher production levels and superior fruit quality.
By targeting Russia as a key export market and leveraging sea routes, India aims to solidify its position as a major player in the global banana trade. This strategic move not only supports India’s farmers but also strengthens its agricultural export sector, contributing to the country’s overall economic growth.
With these efforts, India is poised to achieve its $1 billion banana export milestone while expanding its footprint in international markets.
