FSSAI Cracks Down on Gujarat Oil Millers for Using Recycled Tins

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued legal notices to 200 oil millers, producers, and repackers in Gujarat for using recycled tins for packaging edible oils and vegetable ghee. This practice is banned under the Food Safety and Standards Act due to the significant health risks it poses to consumers.

FSSAI has identified over 650 such businesses across Gujarat, with notices already served to 200. The remaining units, located in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Mehsana, will also face action soon. Despite repeated warnings from Central and State Governments, many small businesses continue to use recycled tins to cut costs.

Violators may face strict penalties, including prosecution under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. Some cases are already under review by the Adjudicating Officer. FSSAI has emphasized that non-compliance will lead to severe consequences to protect public health and ensure food safety standards are maintained.

Food businesses are urged to prioritize safe packaging practices to maintain consumer trust and avoid legal actions.
