Liquor Makers Urge FSSAI for Desi Single Malt Standards

Indian single malt whisky is rapidly gaining recognition in international markets, with exports to 60 countries and numerous prestigious global awards under its belt. The segment’s rapid growth and rising demand for premium alcoholic beverages have prompted Indian liquor manufacturers to advocate for a dedicated standard from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

According to the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), a leading industry body, establishing a separate FSSAI standard for Indian single malt whisky will help maintain its reputation, ensure authenticity, and distinguish it from other types of whisky. The move aligns with the global trend of premiumization, where consumers increasingly seek high-quality alcoholic beverages.

In addition to pursuing specific standards, Indian liquor makers are also working toward obtaining a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Indian single malt whisky.
